I received emails requesting me to cite specific journal papers and get paid once my paper is accepted. I wanted to know the rationale and I was told their job was to enhance the impact factor of the journal. This is unethical and I also suspect it's a scam. Can you share your thoughts and experience.

You are also right in saying that this is unethical and could be a scam. Good reputed quality journals both traditional and online never send emails to authors for papers, to cite specific journal papers or to enhance the impact factor of the journal. It is a good practice to ignore such emails and delete these in the first instance.
Illegitimate publishers/journals are using various techniques to shortcut the academic rigour required for legitimate/reputable publishing and this is one one of such techniques. No reputable publisher will do this

This is something new to me, not even heard about this from my colleagues. But as detailed, the incident is certainly unethical, undesirable and neither be prompted nor tolerated at all. In fact, this should be treated as a kind of crime in the field of academic arena. The academic world including the entire RG family should raise voice against it.
However, I believe this as an act of some section of greedy and dishonest people only, not representing the whole. Honesty, commitment, good senses still matters a lot to most of us

Intriguing views from researchers. So far I pick two salient points from the discourse. There are research scholars who are completely oblivious of this unethical practice and then there are scholars who are aware of this practice. And finally we admit the practice is unethical and should not be encouraged.
