Hi, I am doing work on Cerium oxide nanoparticles, i ordered cerium oxide powder rather than Cerium nitrate for the synthesis of nano particles. Is it possible for me to synthesise nanoparticles using cerim(4) oxide, as it turns gray, right after i dip probe in the solution.
The various methods of nano particles synthesis can be broadly categorized into top-down and bottom-up approaches. Top-down methods involve converting/ breaking down larger materials into nanoscale components, while bottom-up methods form nanoparticles from individual atoms or molecules.
Some Top-Down Methods are Mechanical Milling, Laser Ablation, Sputtering, Lithography, etc.
Most of these methods involve high energy and sophisticated instruments.
Some Bottom-Up Methods are Sol-Gel, Hydrothermal Synthesis, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Solvent Evaporation, Biosynthesis, etc.
In your case, you can go for either mechanical milling or you may convert your oxide into hydroxide or some suitable salt; and then can proceed as per your plan.
Directly, it can not be synthesied? How do you convert it into any other salt? If to convert cerium IV oxide into nitrate??
If you have down bulk CeO₂, by Top-Down Approach it can be converted to nano cerium oxide by planetary ball mill. Use zirconia or stainless steel ball adjust your milling time to 20-50 hours and do check size of the particle periodically by SEM analysis

Rida Khalid If you don't want to go for mechanical milling...You can try to dissolve it in some suitable acids like nitric acid. If it dissolves, you will get your suitable cerium salt and water. Dry it and you can proceed with your normal nanoparticle synthesis with the leftover residue. You can do phase analysis or any other characterization method to confirm your salt formation.

Note: Utmost care should be taken while handling nitric acid and drying out procedures.
