Consider by example distributed file systems (DFS) -that are part of clouds- if you manage infinite number of replications of your files to be fault tolerant you are no more so transparent in the energy consumption.

I don't exactly know a SIMULATION tool, but, one thing I can point out is that, my APC (American Power Conversion) brand UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) reports the carbon footprint of my computer. They do this by simply integrating the power consumption of the computer,

In the end, the carbon footprint is directly related to your computer's power consumption ... The more power the computer consumes, the more heat you are generating, which is coming out of resources that produce CO2.

Carbon footprint depends on multiple facts

1. Cloud Arc

include (processor, memory, visualization, load balancing )

2. Power

3. Location

those things are mutually dependent ...

First fix your metrics

where u r going to start ur research and where you are going to conclude it.

Hmmm. Good ... Multiple "dimensions," in the carbon foorprint ... I like it. Now , it is interesting that, when you build a datacenter around a river and use the river water for cooling, the "additional impact due to exhausting heat" is reduced, which reduces the "carbon footprint" ...

So, it sounds to me like, a simulator should take these into account ... which you counted in your list as (LOCATION) ...

In the case that no existing simulation tool satisfies your need, I think you can simulate the power consumption of a cluster yourself with some given power model. Below are two papers proposing power models based on real experiments.
