Hi, we are looking for data sources for a transport hackathon in late April in Brisbane. One of the considered themes / challenges is based around cycling activity levels and safety.
I am looking for a source of GIS cycling activity data which is also accessible for free or small fee. If it was for Brisbane, so much better!
I am wondering if there is some probe-based (e.g. app) system for general cyclist activity.
I am aware that state and local government collect limited cycling counts each year, but only at specific locations. Fitness-based apps such as Strava have been labelled by others as biased towards certain types of cyclists.
We are interested in the broadest coverage possible. Your hints will be most appreciated.
Hi Chris, Most of the smart fitness tracker companies, Strava, Tom Tom etc now have city labs to manage this data.

The catch is you have to pay for it although from what I understand it is very granular data.

Nice article about Strave. I searched for TomTom, as it is more likely to be representative of general population (less focus on 'athletes'). Do you know where to find their cycling citylab - a quick google search fond nothing.
I used the Strava Global Heatmaps once to analyse the changes in the cyclists paths before and after a new bike path at an urban area in Brazil. Strava is the most popular sports app in the world, not only for athletes.
By the way, I considered the athletes path preferences as an expert opinion, because the experience make then choose better ways (in that case).
Other apps (like Garmin Connect or TomTom) are device dependent, you have to buy a watch to feed the App.
The prices can be a problem and depends on the area size and other variables. You have to inquiry.
