If you are looking for principles of design, I suggest starting with Sanders and McCormick (http://www.amazon.com/Human-Factors-In-Engineering-Design/dp/007054901X#) and similar types of books. The Human Factors Design Handbook has fairly extensive information as well (http://www.amazon.com/Factors-Design-Handbook-Wesley-Woodson/dp/0070717680/ref=pd_sim_b_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Z9QGM5AVV2Q0GWTB98Z) and provide information beyond the standards.
