I need to study about LC MS since I will be using it for my thesis. I know nothing beats practical application but physical classes are not going to start anytime soon i need to equip myself with proper knowledge. Please recommend me any books that i can study as a beginner to be able to grasp the basics. thank you!
LC-MS is often started after several years of formal training learning HPLC first. The "MS" aspect adds onto it a mass detector, of which there are many different types, with many different applications. To learn about LC-MS, start with the fundamentals of HPLC. Books and some webpages are useful for this initial purpose. One of the classic books on the topic of HPLC that I recommend is:
- "Introduction to Modern Liquid Chromatography" by Lloyd R. Snyder et al. [ISBN-13: 978-0470167540]. *Start with this book as an LC-MS method is only as good as the HPLC method it is based on.
For basic to advanced level training topics in HPLC and LC-MS, I would also suggest my own website too. It contains free articles on topics taken directly from the classes I professionally teach and addresses the most common concerns and issues faced by HPLC and LC-MS users.

There are many articles and books which provide an overview of the most popular types of Mass Detectors used with HPLC on the web (use a keyword search to find them). However, few books written about LC-MS alone provide anything but an overview of the ionization types used. Without hands-on experience, it means very little as text. HPLC and MS are all about practical hands-on experience.
Selecting and learning to use one of the many types of mass detectors (MS) should start by narrowing down which type would be most applicable to your work and proposed application. A keyword search will help you select the most applicable types.
