I'be been reading lately about reentry and repatriation of exchange students, the best literature review about it is "Reentry-Areview of literature" By Betina Szkudlarek, she includes some tables at the end in which you will find the authors that talk about your topic. As long as I understand, the first study about students that never return form their exchange programs was the "Brain drain and foreign students" by Lakshmana Rao (https://www.amazon.com/BRAIN-DRAIN-FOREIGN-STUDENTS-Lakshmana/dp/0702212075).
Marie-Claire Patron (Cultural Identity Studies : Culture and Identity in Study Abroad Contexts : After Australia, French without France. 2012) also include in her book information about returning to the host country, or the predisposition of coming back to the host country or moving to a different one.
You will also find some useful information in the chapter 4 of "The Psichology of culture shock" (Ward, Bochner and Furnham 2001).

But what of everyone else, you may ask yourself, again, economics is the answer, only on a smaller scale than Ph.D. students.
