I would like to record wind speed and direction with a small/medium sized portable wind data logger (possible to carry in a backpack). I would like to hear your experience with portable wind loggers and will be happy to get recommendations of different types.

Hi, thanks for advice. I see from my post that I say portable and that is a bit misleading. What I would like to do is to establish a small station for monitoring wind speed and wind direction, which could store data for about two weeks (e.g. on sd cards). I need to carry it for about 1km, so it need to be small enough to carry in a backpack, but it doesn't need to be portable.
Hi. While I still believe that the Kestrel is very proper for a temporary monitoring, you may also consider other alternatives.
Mechanical (cup & windwane) anemometers are not convenient to be carried in a backpack, and you could take advantage of more modern sonic anemometers, which provide wind speed and direction even at very low windspeed, being at the same time ideal to detect high speed gusts . They also offer small, low power dataloggers and a little portable mast easy to deploy.

I see your point with difficulties carrying mechanical anemometers. I was not aware of sonic anemometers, I have sent them a price quote. Do the kestrel log the wind data?

Sure it does! I suggested the Kestrel at the start, because after wind come temperature, and after temperature comes humidity, and further after the windchill, and so on... Kestrel does them all, in a pocket-size instrument you can leave for some days (weeks) attached to a tripod (maybe the same you carry to take your pictures). But -yes- if you want "a station", which could evolve with time, maybe the Decagon can do it better. Obviously, you will be able to attach a thermo/hygrometer as well, to it.
Concerning "sonics", these are for sure the modern solution for wind measurements. And they can survive being carried in a backpack much better than a cup anemometer and a windwane.
