What is the Research Methods Knowledge Base?
The Research Methods Knowledge Base is a comprehensive web-based textbook that addresses all of the topics in a typical introductory undergraduate or graduate course in social research methods. It covers the entire research process including: formulating research questions; sampling (probability and nonprobability); measurement (surveys, scaling, qualitative, unobtrusive); research design (experimental and quasi-experimental); data analysis; and, writing the research paper. It also addresses the major theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of research including: the idea of validity in research; reliability of measures; and ethics. The Knowledge Base was designed to be different from the many typical commercially-available research methods texts. It uses an informal, conversational style to engage both the newcomer and the more experienced student of research. It is a fully hyperlinked text that can be integrated easily into an existing course structure or used as a sourcebook for the experienced researcher who simply wants to browse.

Kelvyn Jones The website you shared has some good information, but I am not impressed with the sample manuscript it shares. It has a minimal literature review and a minimal discussion of the meaning, comparison to the findings of other studies, and lessons learned from the findings.

Faced with the topic of research methods and strategies, the manuals have prospered. In my view, this does not oblige us to think about ways of constructing research objects. For me the best explanation I have received has been from the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu in his text the conquest of the object
Kelvyn Jones, I support your recommendation for the Research Methods Knowledge Base open-source book, though I believe it can too daunting for undergraduate students who are taking the subject for the first time. I instead, I recommend Practical Research Methods: A user-friendly guide to mastering research techniques and projects, by CATHERINE DAWSON. With added practical examples, my novice undergraduate students found it immensely helpful in introducing them to the intricate concepts of research.

It has excellent practical in-class activities that could be used to develop student'sunderstanding.
This book also not free, is more quantitative and it does a really good job of connecting design and analysis
Jacques Tacq (1997) Multivariate Analysis Techniques in Social Science Research: From Problem to Analysis
the subtitle gives its distinctiveness.
