Can you help me with pharyngeal tooth measurements of representatives of the Scardinius genus (S. acarnanicus, S. graecus, S. dergle, S. knezevici, S. plotizza, S. racovitzai, S. scardafa, and S. hesperidicus).
The measurements, that I need, are:
1) height of the crown of pharyngeal tooth
2) width of the crown
Number of needed teeth is between 10-15. I want to describe a new fossil species of the Scardinius genus, and thus information about extant species is very important.
Interesting study, Olexandr. Have you collected your representatives yet? Once you have preserved your specimen I would suggest removing their heads, heating them in the oven at a set temperature for a set time to help with removing soft tissue. Calipers are the best tool for obtaining your measurements at the longest/ widest point, but you must consider whether you want to leave the teeth embedded or remove them from the pharynx. Measure the same tooth by utilizing a number system. Will you use actual measurements or averages? Standardize your procedures and record detailed notes. Keep in mind, a larger sample size generates more accurate representation of extant populations. I have not conducted an experiment like this but would like to hear the results!
