We are screening Arabidopsis seeds transformed with bar gene as a selectable marker. Can we use glyphosate instead of glufosinate for selection? Can the bar gene mediate the degradation of both compounds or it is specific to glufosinate?

1. We use Glufosinate (also known as phosphinothricin and often sold as an ammonium salt) for bar gene- transformed plants selection.

The answer is No.
Glyphosate inhibits ESPsynthase, whereas glufosinate (phosphoinothricin)
inhibits Glutamine synthae.
Just to add to this, Glyphosate is the compound found in Montanto's "Roundup", while glufosinate can be found in "Basta" or "Finale" made by Bayer. There are other brands providing these herbicides though.

Glufosinate is an inhibitor of biosynthesis whereas glyphosate works with amino acids.
