We want to use acrylic base resin for marine application that will be immerse in water for long time. Now we want to know is this paint swell in water(or loss its properties) when using for long time?
That depends. There are acrylic paints out there that have excellent adhesion properties, these are normally not the cheapest to use. Important is also the surface and whether or not you can use a surface pretreatment (like sanding for instance) which will enhance the lifetime significantly.
One suggestion is to have a look at phosphate pre-treatments (i think there are even commercial products out there ready to use) which will help with adhesion.
If you have a hydrophobic acrylic backbone there will not be much swelling and the delamination will come from adhesion problems to your surface.
Acrylic based paints are water resistant in dry form but some silicone resin agents should be added during the paint production (generally after pigment and binder) to make it more hydrophobic. We used to use "TEGO Phobe" and it had good results on our waterborne paints.
Thanks for your response, we found a acrylic-silicon emulsion but it use as outdoor building, do you think can we use it for metal surface?and can we disperse nano material in this paint?
well, facade paints are a bit different in terms of PVC (pigment volume concentration) and they may contain higher amount of pigments and fillers. if you go directly on metal with the same proportion of binder/filler, you will definitely fail. You will need to use higher binder on metals. There is a standard test called "cross cut" for measuring the adhesion of paint. try to perform this.
For the second part about the nano-particles, I believe you can add, but you need to deal with dispersion!!! keep in mind, nano-particles may have effect on surface properties of paint, but no significant impact on coverage performance. I would suggest try to disperse the nano-particles in water (in high shear rate) prior to add fillers and pigments. You also can mix them with filler which I dont recommend!!!
hi, sir .. i am working on a project where we require to cool a system by sea water, so what type of paint would be better to protect iron or stainless steel
