In some literature they have mentioned about the performance of the Pt or Pd based on its structure.
Palladium (similar to the other noble metals Ag, Au, Pt, ...) is a face-centered cubic metal. The most dense net-plane is the (111), and thus it is energetically favoured. Thus Pd thin films tend to for such a surface if the deposition conditions are suitable, i.e. weak interaction between Pd and substrate and temperature not too high not too low. I would propose a Si-wafer or float glass as substrate, and thermal evaporation of Pd from a tungsten (or molybdenum) boat if possible under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Hope this helps, Dirk

The shape (and face) of nanoparticles can be controlled by controlling the crystalline structure of the seed in seed mediated growth process (for colloidal synthesis). For example, from single crystal (octahedral) seed, nanocubes, nanorods can be obtained by controlling the growth between and directions. Shape controlled synthesis from well controlled crystalline structure of seed will be helpful for crystallography control to get Pd(111) faces.
