The longevity of seeds strongly depends on the plant species and on the storage conditions. Storage of seeds results in aging accompanied by gradual loss of seed quality and a decrease in the germination rate. This is especially relevant when seeds need to sustain longer periods of storage or periods with unfavorable conditions such as high temperatures, high moisture, and contamination with microorganisms (Harrington 1972). Loss of germination ability is accompanied by loss of embryo viability and deterioration of storage nutrients.
