If something is to be novel and original then it may, by definition, be different from what was thought in the past. But creativity depends on context. So it is perfectly possible to use an idea from the past in a different new context. It depends on whether you are thinking about big (genius) or little (everyday) creativity.

Yes, the past is full of fragmented treasures in various fields that could be a key to novel ideas. One of the main advantages of the past is that it has ‘loose margins’, creating gaps and spaces that we can fill with new ways of thinking which might be more important than merely small ideas.
