I want to evaluate onion and carrot with basil, but i couldn't get the compatibility of the crops. I am wonder if I get the research done regarding to their companionship.
In terms of basil production it is said that tomatoes and basil are compatible. The role of basil for tomato is to repell whitefly a major pest of the plant. In addition basil and tomato are considered complimentary particularly in tomato based cookery as found in Italian food. If I were to try this out in the field I would plant on a raised bed using the basil as the outside.
Basil and carrot works well as per literature , with onion , a doubtful preposition..Please find an interesting work below:
Influence of intercropping on phytomass and essential oil production in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) and mint (Mentha × villosa Huds.).
Journal article : Revista Brasileira de Plantas Medicinais 2009 Vol.11 No.2 pp.137-140 ref.24
Abstract : Medicinal plants produce their active principles according to environmental stimuli; thus, the presence of other plants may affect the synthesis of secondary compounds. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of intercropping on phytomass and essential oil production in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) and mint (Mentha × villosa Huds.). The study was carried out in the experimental field of the Center for Agriculture, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Montes Claros Campus, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with twelve replicates and six treatments: basil+carrot, basil+lettuce, sole crop of basil, mint+carrot, mint+lettuce, and sole crop of mint. Phytomass and essential oil production in mint were not affected by the treatments. As regards basil, only fresh matter significantly varied with treatments.
yes it is possible, but what is your purpose in this research? your cropping sys. is rainfed or irrigated? are you interested to investigate the ecological effect or economical factors or both of them?
I could hardly get any genuine literature on the two combinations of crops . Therefore , surely , your quarry needs an in-depth research , especially from the angle of allelopathy. Let me cite one example, citrus is least comfortable in coffee gardens , because of the glucosides released by coffee roots are not favorable for citrus rhizosphere microbes to multiply , with the result , the resilience of citrus rhizosphere is drastically reduced , and resultantly , citrus trees start declining ...In your case , menthol associated with basils could pose some worry for carrots , and it would be interesting to see , how menthol from basils interacts with phytochemicals synthesized by onions (allyl disulphide nad alliums)..
I think you should consider this from a very practical sense regarding the timing of the planting and harvesting of the two crops in your area and the weed management system to be considered. How close together and in what arrangement would you consider it to be "intercropping" and what is the goal of this?
A classical intercropping scheme is the combination of basil with tomatoes. The volatiles of basil can reduce the whiteflies which can plague the tomato crop.
The combination of onions with basil and carrots with basil would need to tested for their compatibilities or not. Monocultures could be compared to mixed planting for component yield, quality and economics. The intercropping of these might be beneficial for diseases, pests and weeds. Onions can have allelopathic potential inhibiting a broad spectrum of weed species. Plants of the onion family are used as natural fungicide bactericide.
Recommend that you make the experiment do the analysis and report the results you get it would be useful information.
