We are conducting a respirometry trial with trout and want to know, if we can estimate the maximum metabolic rate without directly measuring it with a chasing protocol. We can´t trigger a MMR response because we want to measure the SDA over the full duration and it would add oxygen comsumption, not related to SDA.

You can always measure MMR via a chase test AFTER measuring SMR. So, you could measure the SDA over the full duration and then, once the fish have hit SMR, you can take them out of their respirometers, chase them, and put them back in to measure MMR. Just make sure they are not still digesting during your MMR measurement!
I wonder if a 40 sec emersion (out of water) would do the trick? You should have a small respirometer, though, so you can measure MMR in the first 3 minutes after the fish is back in the water.
