I want to functionalize my ZnO nano particles with NH2 groups. I found a microwave method where directly one can use APTES. Some more papers report coating all these nano particles with TEOS and using APTES for amine functionalisation. Which method works better?
You can simply functionalize the ZnO with NH2 groups by subjecting the ZnO NPs in ethanolic solution of APTES (or APTMS also) at 70 - 80 deg (with stirring under an inert gas blanket) for 12 hrs with condenser attached to flask (round bottom or conical, whichever you want to use).

Though I use the process described in my first comment, you can have a look at related article 'Surface modification of zinc oxide nanoparticles by aminopropyltriethoxysilane....J. Alloy Compd., 360 (2003), p. 298'. The article describes use of toluene (in place of ethanol) as dispersion medium.
usually if you use APTES directly it could result in nanoparticle aggregation. Especially with amine groups the particle aggregation is a issue which is why you might find most papers use a ratio of TEOS and APTEs or do a silica layer and then APTEs this way your particles are stable and also you dont have high APTES concentration compared to NPs to result in aggregation
at das yes gold ahs strong affinity to thiol groups so cysteamine binds to the au nps thats not much use with ZnO you will need to put something on the surface like silica or APTEs. to covalently coupling the amine group silica could be functionalized with COOH groups and a EDC NHS used to link amine functional group to the surface
And as for people suggesting surface drying to amine functionalization it is described so for substrates and not for nanoparticles in suspension. You end up aggregating the particles if you remove the solvent.
I have used APTES for mica functionalization for AFM measurements. In my case, only with the vapour phase is enough to functionalizate the mica. i.e. Formation of aminosilane-functionalized mica for atomic force microscopy imaging of DNA.
you should be sure that the surface contains -OH groups, it will depend on the pH. remember to carry out the reaction in non-aqueous media (eg. ethanol).
this is a very nice question. i have a relevant work to this question under review, where i was able to attach APTES on iron oxide nanoparticles without agglomeration via OH site on the Fe3O4 with neither surfactant nor silica nanoparticles. the reaction is simple, the hydroxyl group hydrolyses with methoxy group present in the alkoxysilane of APTES to get terminal amine on my nanoparticle.

No need to coat with TEOS, you can directly functionalise ZnO with APTES, but you sholud activate the ZnO by vaccum drying and should use dry solvents like toluene or DCM in inert atmosphere with reflux. We have recently published on paper in which we have functionalised SBA-15 with APTES.(RSC Adv., 2013, DOI: 10.1039/C3RA41966E)
