Space analysis of TMJ by CBCT is is making life easy for those clinicians who must evaluate the tissues of the temporomandibular joint complex in patients with orofacial pain. It is indeed an accurate method.
Space analysis never be reliable in determining the TMJ status since the method of taking CBCT is quite different , i.e, taking CBCT for patients biting on bite block (incisal intercupation) versus without bite block (occlusal intercuspation). These two methods bring the head of the condyle at different position which eventually affect your joint space measurements.
Clicking is basically a clinical manifestation which may or may not be accompanied by radiograhic changes of the bone. This means that a patient may suffer severe clicking without any bone alteration. You need here to assess the position of the disc at different stages of mouth opening which is not feasable by CBCT but rather MRI especially the dynamic type. Soft tissue evaluation is not recommended by CBCT.
