I am a bit puzzled by the wording of the question. If you mean to ask about analysis and/or insight in the absence of formal models, then of course such model-less thinking is both useful and common. Models can be very constraining in that the necessity to precisely state assumptions and methods limits applicability to very complex issues into which intuition may be a better guide. On the other hand model building is an exercise in which you are forced to be precise (and often find that you are yourself unclear on what you think about some aspect of a problem) and whether the model itself is or is not useful in the end the process of forcing clarity may be useful. Also, I recall a fellow grad student (many years ago) turned a couple of paragraphs in Ricardo into an explicit mathematical model and found that Ricardo had noticed only one of two possible outcomes in his own analysis.
