In regards to findings for qualitative research, can the themes emerging be different than what's written in litertature review. They may have been covered by some studies but that is not mentioned in the literature review but can I reference those studies in findings despite them not being in lit review? or would that be inappropriate?

I agree with Olivier Serrat that the essence of qualitative research in particular is to interpret what is in the data. In part, that may match things that were already described in your literature review, but it certainly can uncover new themes as well. This is especially likely when there is an exploratory component to your research.
I agree with what has been said already. To be maybe more emphatic, you WANT something to come out of your study that has not been reported in the literature before. That's the new gem you have identified!
The essence of literature review is to find out the existing body of knowledge surrounding a particular phenomenon. The findings from literature are subject to change as academic knowledge advances. Yes, new themes can emerge in the findings from a research study. With the emergency of the new themes, it is assumed that you are adding to the existing body of knowledge on the subject matter and has contributed to knowledge about the study.
If you want to avoid problems with reviewers, the studies should be in the literature review.
Yes, certainly, as others have affirmed. Then you might highlight the convergences between what you found & the lit review, & what may be new or different. It also may be interesting to then speculate—using tentative language—as to why some of your findings may be different (e.g., different population, age group, culture; dif’t geographic location; or that the lit review was dominated by quantitative studies—and qualitative methods can uniquely reveal new issues and insights by exploring participant perspectives and experiences, rather than circumscribing findings through researchers’ preconceived questions and understanding.
It would be recommended to cover the themes you are including in your research, in your literature review. In case you are using someone else's findings in your work, then it should be touched upon in the literature survey. In case you are coming up with your own findings, then that is part of your results or observations usually.
From a qualitative research standpoint, the themes emerging from a research can be different from literature. Qualitative studies usually explore. Going by this, new issues which existing literature might not have discovered may come up. It is in this regard that qualitative researchers are usually encouraged to have a free mind space to absorb some new, yet, critical issues which may not have been noticed in literature. In addition, themes are not to be generated strictly from the objectives of the study but from the real and concrete issues which the data collection methods may enable the researcher to unravel.
Literature review discusses published information in a particular subject area, and sometimes information in a particular subject area within a certain time period. In some researches, the theme you include in your research may be different than literature review.
A. Shams, the themes that emerge from a qualitative study could be different from those that may have been reviewed using the literature in the area. In other cases, it may well be that the themes re-echo/reinforce those that have already been reviewed in the literature. The beauty in both cases is to acknowledge if difference or similarity happens to be the case. The problem with research in developing countries is we conduct research with a desire to conform. However, if we fail to confirm, we get disheartened. Result pointing to altogether a different conclusion may work as a basis for developing new explanation.
So getting differing results is an encouraging thing not a source of despair.
