Well, this is an interesting problem that has been tossed about for decades -- but to my mind, we still do unnecessary work as humans that we could easily pass off to computers and robots. For example, the majority of mathematics instruction is done with the premise that humans must learn how to perform hand calculations or do 'mental math' when they could use a calculator instead. Why is this the case? What reason is given by math teachers that students must not use the robot/machine/computer/calculator, and how valid is that reason?

You see, the way work happens in so many schools is part of an old tradition that is supported by curriculum and testing companies who sell billions of dollars worth of products to schools around the world. But if that were not the case, and students were not required by the schools to follow the purchased curriculum that leads to the purchased test. . . . well, perhaps we would find something else more interesting to do. And in that endeavor, using robots or computers to think with could be very interesting and produce some powerful results.

To me, the question you ask rests on some fundamental principles about the nature of intellectual work that I see as far more elastic.

If learning is about actively seeking knowledge in carefully designed environments, with guidance, then surely robots can be placed at every turn to provide guidance. I bet the kids would learn lots from trying to do stuff the robots wouldn't have an answer for.

It is sad to think of mathematics teaching the way Bryan Philip Sanders writes about it. I know he is right, but the purpose of engaging this content is not only about performing calculations. Depending on your perspective, it's either about keeping children busy, or it is about creating a basis for seeing more abstract patterns and connections. But now I'm moving away from the question.

Even if we can do something, do we want to do it? If providing robots to do certain aspects of teaching, could we keep the same number of teachers to do some of the close work with learners? Or do we want to create a great unemployment base in our economy? Those to me are more relevant issues.

It will be much longer for the robot to replace an inquiry sort of interchange than it will to replace a lecturer.

How perceptive can robots be? A good teacher or lecturer can usually see through their facial expressions whether or not a student is understanding the material. This is true even when the student isn't prepared to admit that they don't understand. The teacher can then adjust their mode of teaching.

A counter example might be that students could be more willing to admit problems to a robot than a to a person.

There are probably circumstances where a robot with good flexible AI can be pretty effective. And on-line teaching where there is not direct contact between teacher and student is one area where this could be true. But there are also cases, and think about anything that requires imagination and creativity, where I would put my money on a good human teacher.

Creativity after all often depends on seeing something in a new way .

No robots will never effectively take over from human teachers...why? Because teaching is inherently relational in nature. Students thrive and grow because teachers take the time to get to know them, help empower and develop them...a robot can never achieve this. A robot may be able to provide information and guide students through tasks, but that in itself is not teaching. Then add in the layer of student engagement, which student is going to sit there and 'obey' a robot. What type of robot is going to have duty of care in a science laboratory? What kind of robot is going to go do yard duty and have meaningful conversations with students while they are out there? None...if teachers are replaced by robots it is because of a corrupted education system run by politicians and bean counters, not true educators.

When robots are mentioned, the image of a human-like automoton can come to mind. Given that teaching is already being augmented by AI (artificial intelligence) systems (such as automated feedback or grading), then the question might be changing to how best can education be augmented by AI. The Global Learning XPRIZE, for example, has set a challenge to develop an open source (and scalable) software solution that can enable children in developing countries to teach themselves basic arithmetic. There may be other reasons for augmenting human teachers in more developed parts of the world, even if only to provide respite in instances of acute short-term teacher shortage.

No self respecting robot would ever work for a professor's wages. Having said that, it is the ability of a human professor to respond to questions outside of a fixed data base that ensures that humans will not be replaced. AI platforms can analyze information and provide answers. But we have not yet achieved total intellectual independence in an AI platform as of yet.

I think we would need co-bots to work along with the teacher, but replacing a teacher with robot would not work in teaching and learning as expressed above as teaching is "relational in nature."

Regarding substitution and its consequences in the development of ITs in education, we must consider that education (from the Latin educare) comes to be - to form the being, not a mere transference of knowledge, much more a concern in how we learn and what to do with what we learn.

ITs are of paramount importance, not only in our century, but ever since and today we perceive in technologies not only PCs and their algorithms, but much more, their goals and their influences.

Finally, we believe that IT should be used in education, but teacher-student interaction must always be valued - robots are auxiliaries, never masters.

I am in agreement with most of the earlier made points. But let me make a couple observations. Humans are social animals (Aristotle), and as such they ll always seek human interaction. In addition, humans do not do well with change, especially technology-related change (both terms defined broadly). History has proved this time and again: more recently, TV was demonized, then programmed computer instruction, then online learning, and now AI. And thus questions and concerns like this is so predictable as is (thankfully still) human nature.
