Can the detrital zircon method tell about the true sedimentary age?

Assuming a sedimentary formation were formed, said 1 Ga. This formation contain many detrital zircons of various ages for dating. And the youngest zircon crystals were dated 1.5Ga. So, should this sedimentary formation be dated as 1.5Ga, rather than the actual sedimentary time?

In short, what can the detrital zircon method tell us?
