I would like to know if it is better to extract the rose essential oil using fresh wet rose petals by using steam distillation or is it more beneficial to use dried rose petals (which is off course more expensive) and use other extraction methods like SFE (super-critical fluid extraction)?
primarily fresh leaves are used and moreover the the injection of steam is routine procedure to distill. The disadvantage is that the petal forms the large compact mass where sometimes steam cannot penetrate properly leads to less recovery of oil. As the distillation is refined and the process called cohabitation is used to recover the maximum oil.
As far as SFE is concerned its good method to recover maximum but the disadvantage is not economically viable for growers. Fallowing links may give more insight into the subject.
