This is in relation about wether the data emanating from point cloud (GPS, Scanning etc) can be treated using bigdata techniques, databases etc. or not.
I believe that streaming point cloud data fits the bill for a classification of a Big Data issue as long as the data problem embodiesthe 5 V's (attached link for more info, I disagree with the author that only 'Value' matters - value cannot be measured until the utility of the data is well understood). That being said, to treat streamed point cloud data with big data techniques, the data should be collected, stored analyzed, etc. with an appropriately designed software architecture. This will ensure that the outcome of the big data 'techniques' have maximal value, and that the architecture enables you to scale your application vertically and horizontally.
