You should check out the NIH repository for P. berghei. It used to be called M4 (they changed the name fairly recently) and in the past, they would give any investigator one free culture per year. JP Caruso, PhD, 1983, UGA, Veterinary Parasitology
Thank you Bernard. MR4 is the correct abbreviation, not M4 as I said earlier (I haven't worked much with P. berghei lately, as you may have guessed from my earlier answer).JP Caruso, PhD
Dear Vishnu, quickly some answers: 1) you cannot culture berghei in vitro, as it will not reinvade, and anyway you will not get blood to do the culture. bergheii is only good for in-vivo mice experiments. 2) you can get them form MR4, but they are now represent by BEI resources (pretty much the same: http://www.beiresources.org/About/MR4.aspx). However, although they are free, you have to pay the shipment, which depends on dry ice weight and for us in Portugal is always close to 600-800$ or more... Furthermore, if you do not have a sure way of getting them through your customs, they may deforest there sand die... 3) Thus, the easiest way for berghei is to find somebody close to you who has it, visit him and take a stock home with you (of course i do not imply doing this against regulations...)
