Dear reader
I am a undergrad student in material science and I struggle understanding how inorganic material ( metal surfaces or inorganic pigments) can absorb NIR/IR light. I havent find a good article describing this and thus turn for professional advice here. Is there a fundamental theory describing this for nonorganic material?

Although light is said to by reflected by a metal surface, it interacts with the electrons to a depth described by the SKIN DEPTH. The electrons oscillate at the light frequency, and these electron oscillations couple to the crystal lattice via ELECTRON-PHONON COUPLING, thus transferring energy to the material, which is manifest as heat.
