Thru "tuyeres" (holes) above the iron filling hearth and charge above - the hot air blast "supports" the weight of the charge above but allowing the dense liquid iron to fall as drops into the hearth.
Hot air is used though pure oxygen injection increases production it also can melt the tuyeres holes and other furnace components.
