Every grammar checker I've ever seen is basically useless as they do not understand context. Your best course of actions are (1) to spend time reading well-written scientific papers by native English speakers to practice and improve your own English, and (2) to find a native English speaker to co-author with or at least proof-read your papers. This is also a good idea in general as it always helps with improving the flow and clarity of your paper.

It depends on the OS and software you use. Both Microsoft Office (http://office.com)  and freeware Libre Office (http://libreoffice.org) offer spell check for English and Hebrew (for spellchecking Hebrew you in general need to install appropriate extensions/packages). 

For TeX/LaTeX documents there are certain built-in tools for spellchecking English (e.g. aspell under Linux, see the first link below for more comprehensive discussions of such tools) and e.g. Hspell for Hebrew (see the second link below); the LyX editor also has Hebrew spellchecking facilities.

I agree that automated programmes are generally good, but will not pick up anything to do with style, academic construction, academic transition, target publisher requirements etc.  There is a price to pay for 'mastery' of these skills:  either become 'expert' yourself, or have another 'expert' join up with you (paid or unpaid).

I guess starting from Russian and continuing with Hebrew, it is not easy to jump into English. But, there is no other way to learn it than to read English papers or books, go to English spoken conferences or even go for some time time for a postdoc in an englishspeaking country. Any translation with google or other software may be sometimes useful but will be never able render your thoughts. The language must be somehow "your" when you start to write using it. For my generation, English started to be "our" thanks to the Beatles songs:)

Have a look at REF-N-WRITE scientific paper writing tool. This tool allows you to import text from previous papers relevant to the subject area in MS word. While you are writing your paper, you can just search for similar statements from other authors and inherit their vocabulary and language to improve your paper. I've just finished writing a new tool for checking spelling and grammar directly on LaTeX files, called TeXtidote:

The program can remove markup from the file and send it to the Language Tool library, which performs a verification of both spelling and grammar in a dozen languages. What is unique to TeXtidote is that it keeps track of the relative position of words between the original and the "clean" text. This means that it can translate the messages from Language Tool back to their proper location directly in your source file. By default, TeXtidote produces an HTML report that shows your original sources, with the errors found by Language Tool highlighted at the correct location (see attached screeshot).

The tool is free and easy to install (OS-independent, requires Java). I encourage you to give it a try and tell me what you think!

I think you should develop your own skills is a better idea for writing good papers. Make good reading habit and follow some famous writers who publish papers in your domain.
