I have always understood an allosteric site to be a regulatory site on an enzyme that is separate from the active site of catalysis, but I have never heard that the allosteric site MUST be on a separate subunit of the enzyme -- until today. So, I am wondering if there are any single-subunit enzymes that exist that have an allosteric site (modulatory site separate from the active site), OR are there any multi-subunit enzymes that have an allosteric site on the same subunit as the active site? It seems unlikely to me, but I never considered or assumed it to be impossible or nonexistent. Thanks for any insights.
