The potential difference between WORK and REF is measured by a high impedance voltmeter, so the current value is 0 in this circuit. If you think to increase the current or current density in WORK-AUX circuit, using a Pt wire as REF doesn't help.
You may use any material that is not reacting with the electrolyte as REF, but the stability of such an electrode is uncertain (in organic solvent, using a Ag wire as a pseudo-REF is quite common).
