I will recommend you analyze the New Organon of Francis Bacon and some other texts from him that helped to the development of modern science. Actually, Will Durant has an important perspective about it. But, to summarize their ideas. Philosophy is a general knowledge that should organize science, by scientific research you can learn about certain objects in time and space, but just by asking fundamental questions you can understand ethical and moral issues that are absolutely important to guide us as human beings.

By acquiring a PhD degree from a good university, a scholar is supposed to possess special capacity in grasping those parts of philosophy which will help in the development of science & innovation. For example:

A PhD holder would have learnt how to distinguish between science & non-science or fact & fiction, how the scientific way of thinking works in building up a body of knowledge, the basis or logic of scientific claims, what characteristics are necessary for engagement with a problem or a phenomenon, how theory & empirical data are correlated, the step by step systematic approach in dealing with a project, and how to organize & present the scientific work in a precise language.

Philosophy as a system of thinking to create a foundation for knowledge-creating is essential to every scientific field. It is good to know the epistemology (knowledge base), the metaphysics (where to apply the knowledge), the methodology and the axiology (aesthetics and ethics). Sometimes you are not aware of this system of thinking but you have to apply it, that's why it is good to think before hand about it. Serendipity helps a lot but systematic thinking is often the best way to come to innovation and the improvement of science.
