Knowledge is no one's monopoly. Modern facilities (fast communication, easy access to published/stored data, availability of sophisticated instruments, better institutional structure) are resulting in generation of new knwledge at logrithmic scale.
Quite apart from that, if the younger generation would not outpace their teachers, supervisors and mentors, knowledge creation would come to a standstill. Such is not the case, hwever.
We all should be thankful to our teachers and supervisors and work hard and efficiently to make them proud of us.
Why not? Especially if he is the original of the concept and idea behind the work. Knowledge is no right of monopoly to anyone. Existence of new facts and technology may open a student to more outstanding experience and discovery that would outrun the supervisor's earlier feat. This most possible much longer after successful tutelage, support and certification by the supervisor.
It happens all the time. People who go for PhD are usually very sharp. The probability of them being more intelligent than their supervisor may be around 50 %

In fact I feel there is every possibility that the one who learns from world class supervisor will turn out to be world class....in that particular subject/field
Younger generation has much more IQ and technolOgy on their side to overcome the hurdles ...what the old timers has to do with limited resources.
