Which glucometer can be used for measuring blood glucose level in mice for OGTT experiments? Can we used any glucometer available in market which is used for measuring blood glucose level in humans?
As long as your glucose challenge is moderate, such that the peak blood glucose levels always remain below 600mg/dl, you will be fine.
Several years ago we tested all portable glucometers we could buy in US and compared them against each other in a fairly wide range of glucose concentrations (~25mg/dl - ~550mg/dl). The Beckman glucometer that uses glucose oxidase reagent, was used as the standard for comparison. Of about 7 meters tested (3 were from Europe), Bayer's Elite gave consistently relatively more accurate and more reproducible readings. None were perfectly accurate or reproducible compared to a properly calibrated Beckman. There were variations between multiple readings using each meter with the same sample and within multiple meters of the exact same brand and model. Higher levels produced larger errors (generally read lower). Overall, Elite did better.
Since then, Bayer's Elite has been discontinued. It was replaced by Contour, which was tested against the Elite (and not the rest of the brands) and seemed equally decent. We still use this brand routinely in all cases where blood volumes are limited.
I expect that many of the newer versions are equally accurate (or inaccurate) but if you have very small blood volumes, your choices are limited.
