Mobile phones and the spread of infectionThe mobile phone has become an indispensable tool in this day and age. Most people today can’t start their day without checking their phones for messages, emails etc. they might have received through the night before. It has become a habit – like tapping your fingers or flicking your hair – to pull out your mobile phone despite not receiving a call, text message or notification. People tend to feel out of sync with the rest of the world when they do not check their phones. Out of the 7 billion people in the world, more than 50 per cent are active mobile phone users. As of 2015, Singapore ranked highest globally for smartphone penetration, and the highest for mobile phone usage typically within the ages 25-34. This is a significant age group as it commonly encompasses medical students, residents and other doctors-in-training.
The Potential for Carrying Infectious Diseases
Hard surfaces have a high propensity of facilitating the survival of certain pathogens for longer than 24 hours outside of the body. Mobile phones’ plastic or metal hard exteriors thus have the potential to harbour these pathogens.
1. Mobile phone contamination across professions
In a study by Akinyemi et.al. (2009), researchers swabbed 400 mobile phones of participants from different professions. The highest contamination was seen in food vendors and the lowest in health workers; the latter can be attributed to frequent hand-washing. Samples showed growths of S. Aureus. Other bacterial agents identified were Enterococcus Feacalis, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Escherichia Coli, Klebsiella Spp, and the highest being that of Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus. 2. Mobile phones breeding grounds for infections
Mobile phones are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria as they are frequently held, and more often than not, they are not sanitized. A focused study on healthcare workers and mobile phones was conducted by Ulger et. al. (2009). The primary question of the study was, "Are we aware how contaminated our mobile phones with nosocomial pathogens?” The results showed an alarming rate of bacterial contamination of mobile phones at 94.5 per cent. 31.3 per cent had gram negative organisms, 52 per cent had S. Aureus as some carried other nosocomial-important pathogens with the isolates from hands and mobile phones being similar.
Preventive Measures
With the daily usage of mobile phones, and the high levels of contact with them, standards need to be set to prevent the transmission of infections through this vehicle.
1. Awareness
Awareness regarding maintaining proper hand hygiene, infection-control, disinfection etc. needs to be established and reiterated for all healthcare professionals regularly. Practice guidelines have been suggested on how to address the problems with the use of electronic devices such as the mobile phone.
2. Restricting areas of use
Mobile phones are used by healthcare professionals in almost any area – from the emergency room to the intensive care unit. As a result, transmission of infections occur easily via mobile phones – much more than what we might expect. Mobile phone usage should thus be restricted to certain areas of the hospital – sterile environments. Use of mobile phones or devices could be avoided in the wards, where risk of infection is much higher. Both healthcare professionals and patients and their families should be reminded of this.
3. Digital hygiene
While cleaning mobile phones may not be a common practice yet, it probably should move towards this. Healthcare professionals especially can start disinfecting their phones regularly. This includes using sanitizing wipes at the entrance of operating theatres, and reminding fellow doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals to do the same. Mobile phone manufacturers have certain recommendations on how to clean the devices depending on the type being used. Touch screen phones have special disinfecting chemicals as alcohol may cause damage to the screen. But if the phone has a screen protector, alcohol can be used sparingly to disinfect it.
4. Knowing your disinfectants
Hospital grade disinfectant is the best to be used on devices as it has a broader coverage in killing harmful pathogens. Since alcohol can only rid the phone of certain organisms, if the device cannot be cleaned by hospital grade disinfectant, and you are dealing with high risk patients, it is best to avoid using the device at all. It is the responsibility of the healthcare professional to be aware of the potential hazards mobile phones carry, and work to avoid the spread of infection. MIMS
