Low birth weight (LBW) is still a major public health issue, particularly in poor nations. However, LBW is still linked to cardio-metabolic, mental, and infant and adult mortality in both developed and developing nations. Between 15% and 20% of all births are thought to be LBW or very low birth weight ( 1500 g), as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), which equates to at least 20 million infants worldwide.
