The high-load activated sludge method uses the adsorption properties of sludge to remove particulate and partially bound COD in sewage. The adsorption capacity comes from the EPS on the surface of the sludge. If iron ions are added to HRAS, can the iron ions promote the increase of sludge EPS concentration and thus enhance the sludge adsorption of COD?
iron, under appropriate conditions, could promote the formation of sludge useful for the removal of colloidal particles both by absorbing them and by incorporating them through the sweep flocculation mechanism. These sludges, based on amorphous iron hydroxide, could be produced through the Fenton reaction, adding to the reaction environment iron (II) salts and hydrogen peroxide.
