It depends on the forest and area. You may try to use interferometric techniques for autumn-string time. Try to use L-band (ALOS).

To detect "potential" landslide areas you would need to obtain some kind of information about changes in the surface. Then, you could explore it using the longest microwave available (P or L), because, to this end, it is necessary the signal pass through the (rain?) forest.

Differential Interferometric SAR (DINSAR) in longer wavelengths should enable this. the L-band SAR from ALOS should be of interest here as mentioned by some researchers already.
