Tryptone is simply casein that is digested with the protease trypsin. Trypticase Soy Broth and Tryptone Soy Broth are just alternative names for the same media, often abbreviated to TSB, for example.
These media are tryptone based as opposed to peptone, which is peptic digest of animal tissues with added NaCl that many other non-selective media are made from.
Tryptone media is therefore a defined medium as we know exactly the components that makes it up, as opposed to peptone based where we don't know exactly the chemical components as it's from digesting eukaryotic (yeast, animal, or plant) tissue, therefore it is often referred to as an undefined medium or complex medium when it contains peptone.
Jordan Wight has responded well. Tryptone is very different from peptone and one should not be confused with the other. Perhaps, if we knew what kind of microbe(s) you intend to culture, we would help better.
Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum ATCC 7956. The culture media consists of Peptone ad Trypticase both as you can see below:
ATCC Medium: 1869 PRAS-PYG w/Tween 80 Peptone……………………………………..5.0 g Trypticase…………………………………...5.0 g
I am not able to locate trypticase from any company. However, I could locate tryptone, tryptone peptone and trypticase peptone. Please tell me if I can use these in place of the above metioned chemicals.
Smita Dutta it's definitely not clear on their website. I would contact ATCC to figure out what exactly you need to make the medium and if by trypticase they mean tryptone. Hopefully that works out!
