Hi,
I have been using Pt coil as counter electrode for HER in 0.5 M H2SO4. Unfortunately, we can observe Pt leaching out from the coil during prolonged cycling. To avoid this I started using glassy carbon as counter electrode for stability test for longer time. Even this does not help as it peels off after some time. Can I use stainless steel as a counter electrode in the same electrolyte?

Why not, you can use it. But use the SS series (301 or 316L) as a good counter electrode for your experiments. Indeed, I advise to use a platinum or palladium (not coil form) in ring form with a suitable thickness to avoid the corrosion process may be happen from use high concentration of the sulfuric acid during prolonged cycling.

Stainless steel anodes are useful whenever they are acceptable (such cyanide gold plating bath) but will not hold up in most acid baths (for prolonged cycling, they'll dissolve in the solution you’re using, 0.5 M H2SO4).

It is not recommended to use stainless steel as an anode in acidic media while its use in alkaline media was reported.
In your case, I suggest to use DSA anode

Stainless steels, ITO, FTO and similar materials are not recommended as anodes for HER in acidic media as least for two reasons: (1)They dissolve after long time exposure in acids. (2) The Ni(II), (and probably Cr(III)) , In(III) and Sn(II) ions could be easily reduced at the cathodic compartment (for the pH you're using). Consequently, the nature of the cathode used will change substantially, the cell overvoltage and the results of your work too. The BEST anode materials in your case are Platinum sheet or Platinized Titanium grid, eventhough their high costs. Hope that's useful.
