I am doing extraction of plant samples. I use a rota evaporator to concentrate my samples. I am running out of ethylene glycol to use as a coolant. what are the other alternatives I can use?
It depends on substances used for plant material extraction. When using methanol or ethanol for extraction, watter or simple alcohols should be fine. You just try to keep coolant minimum of 20 degrees celsius cooler. You can also use 65% glycerol - 35% water solution, or you can try 60% ethylene glycol solution with water to bulk up the volume if your are running low on stock.
I'm going to interpret your question differently- it sounds like you need a liquid for the condensation coils for rotary evaporator? You can use diethylene glycol, but can't you use plain anti-freeze that you can get from a local gas station? It is also used to raise the boiling point of the engine cooling water, so it is also used in India.
See if the conditions tarries for the use of these alternatives.
If the vapor temperature is high enough, you can use water by applying a recirculating chiller to cool the water or connect the condenser to a tap. But, that's if the coolant is at least 20°C cooler than your vapor temperature. If the coolant need to be brought near or below 0°C then ethanol or methanol is preferable for low-temperature applications. They exhibits non-viscous, non-corrosive, and have extremely low boiling points.
