Dear geniuses in qualitative research,
I am currently on coding and categorising phase of my data. I feel like I should use both NVIVO and paper for the same. I started with 3 big chart papers that contain anchor codes to my research questions and have begun to sort out the codes from NVIVO to respective chart papers. I sometimes begin to feel like I might be doing wrong way. Please suggest me relating with your own style / experience of working with qualitative data.
There is absolutely no right or wrong answer here :)
I 100% encourage using both. I personally can't get to know the data well enough just on screen (each to their own preference though of course!).
I usually read the transcript and make notes in one margin. I then read again and in the other margin start to group those notes into codes. Then I start to go through and put these codes into NVivo. Appreciate this is super time consuming but I find whichever way you do it you end up reading them multiple times by the end anyway! I also struggle to stare at a screen for too long to read.
I also at later stages like to bring things out of NVivo onto large paper to get a picture of what is going on.
Honestly it is whatever works for you as long as you are following the basic steps of your analysis method. And as long as you keep a note of what you have done so you could go back through if necessary.
It is what works for you and makes you closer to your data that really matters. I use both and like to feel my paper and write on it. I also use NVivo and Atlas ti but I have come to realise computer software doesn't analyse data, a researcher does.

Frankly saying, it depends 100% on the type of the collected data that you would like to analyze. For example, some qualitative data collected via interviews are suitable to be analyzed using only content analysis. In short, the nature of the gathered data determines the approach of the analysis.
