In synthesis of polystyrene particles by soap-free emulsion polymerization method in presence of PVP, I know if I use AIBA as an initiator, PS has positive charge while It will be negative if I use KPS. But I don't have any idea about the effect of AIBN on PS surface charge.
AIBN by itself will provide no charge. The PVP will impart a net positive charge, but it may not be sufficient to give stability to the latex. I am not certain of the abbreviation of AIBA. I have used 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride to impart a positive charge. Because of hydrogen bonding of the amidinium ions, this gives better solvation and better orientation to the surface of the PS particle.

My US patent 4,608,139 Electrocoating describes a process using shear stable cationic latex that used AIBA. I have not reviewed the patent thoroughly, but I believe I ran experiments wherein the only source of cationic functionality was the initiator. The patent really addresses the issue of non-ionic, steric stabilizers not being effective in water, but are so in aqueous ethanol, and likely other mixed aqueous media. I was led to try this both based on a comment made at a Colloid & Interface conference as well as discussions with Prof. Morton Litt (Case Western Reserve U). Other of my patents of that same time period related to cathodic electrodeposition may also have info of use to you.
