I'm thinking about doing a research in satellite image processing field. Can I calculate the area covered of cloud/forest/vegetation/rural/water using deep learning/AI? If so, can someone provide links of related literatures. It would be very helpful, thank you!

Yes you can do that! But why do you want to do it using Deep Learning?
Some literature proved that Deep learning is inferior to some other machine learning algorithms.

Yes, you can calculate it with deep learning. You need a big database to train your neural network. You can use CNNs as a deep neural network. Then use this network to calculate the area. MATLAB help includes many examples. You can take a look at MATLAB help.

I realized I can do this with image segmentation. Most of the papers I read is only for single segmentation like for cloud only, land area only or water area only. Are there any study that implemented image segmentation on multiple areas of interest? I attached a file for better understanding (car, road, building and trees are separated by segmentation). Thanks!
