Pakistan is sixth biggest country in the world with rapidly growing population and need hundreds of tons of additional food each year to cope needs of added population. On the other hand it is recklessly loosing precious farmland by converting it in to colonies and several other non-farm uses which can be a threat for its future food supplies. The question needs scientific research based answer.

My research on food security focuses more on "consumer behaviour" rather than biophysical aspects and policies.
In Pakistan like other low income countries where over 90% of the population depends on subsistence agriculture esp shifting cultivation (swidden agriculture), food production would be affected. This would be due to a drop in arable land even if biophysical conditions remain the same.
On the contrary, agricultural intensification (Boserup Theory) through mechanization, improved, pest & drought resistant seed varieties, fertilizer use, market access, improved land tenure & management policies, labour availability, subsidies and incentives would invariably increase crop yields as in high income countries.
All what Pakistan needs, is a political will to drive the change.
