World population has crossed 7.7 billion. It's needs for space and resources are also rapidly growing. The state of the planet is deteriorating at high speed
According to a report published by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the changes currently observed in the Earth system are unprecedented in the history of humanity. Efforts to slow the pace or extent of these changes, which UNEP deems to be moderately successful, have "failed to reverse negative environmental change," the report says. UNEP emphasizes that neither the scale nor the pace of these have decreased in the last five years. Thus, unless humanity changes course immediately, critical thresholds will soon be reached, says the report. "If this continues, if current patterns of natural resource production and consumption continue to prevail and nothing is done to reverse this trend, governments will have to take responsibility for unprecedented levels of degradation and repercussions." Says Achim Steiner, Director General of UNEP. The definitive transition to a green economy with low CO2 emissions and efficient use of resources must be urgently initiated.
