I have come to a paper (attached) stating that conversion of Organic Nitrogen to Ammonia Nitrogen basically occurs anaerobically, i.e near zero Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration level (in sewer pipes).
In contrast, other literature showed that conversion of Organic Nitrogen to Ammonia Nitrogen was happening under aerobic condition (in rivers).
Could anyone clarify in details? Thanks in advance.
In pipes microbiological processes take place. In river there are a lot of aquatic plants, algaes, plancton, fishes and other organisms. Plants and algaes can consume organic nitrogen. Then it goes throw food chain. Fishes and other organisms excret ammonia nitrogen.
Organic Nitrogen can be converted into Ammonia Nitrogen and the way around in soils, river water and even in sea water. These reactions are usually part of the Nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in which plants, fungi, animals, and mainly microbes are involved.
In fact, this conversion can be performed under aerobic, anaerobic or even micro anaerobically.
