I want to measure carbon dioxide emission from a no-till plot where a lot of residues are being retained on the soil surface. The objective of my study is to measure carbon dioxide emission from no-till vis-a-vis convention till plots and their influence on dynamics of N, P, and S.
Is it possible to use a chamber in the field and use alkali solution to trap carbon dioxide ?
soil CO2–C fluxes can be measured in the field by the static chamber method. Cylindrical chambers, 15-cm height, 5 cm into the soil, can be used when the soil is bare. During the cycles of crop growth, you need the chamber into the soil to 30 cm detph, and inserted before crop emergence. this keep free of plants to avoid the inclusion of roots in the chambers. The respiration measured with these long cylinders is considered soil respiration free of root respiration. you can also use the short ones during the crop to acount for root+soil respiration. In the chamber CO2-C is trapped in a vial containing 15 mL of NaOH 1N and, the excess of NaOH is titrated against HCl, using phenolphthalein as indicator.

Yes you may trap almost all carbon dioxide by using alkali trapping (KOH) under the fully computerized system Respicond VI, it allows continuous measurement of CO2 evolution. For more details please go through the attached pdf.

Hi all,
we adapted the above-mentioned, low-cost and high throughput "respicond method" (which was basically constructed for CO2 measurements in the lab only) to using this method also under field conditions. With this method you dont need to account for temperature-induced conductivity changes of the KOH (NaOH)-solution. Please see the attached paper.
