Recently, I've begun engaging a patient suffering Alzheimer's with daily sessions of chess. The patient, although never having been a proficient player, has shown over the course of several weeks an increased capacity/memory for chess strategies as well as rules. I would like to consider myself to be a somewhat advanced player of chess. So, I would like to at least believe I have an eye for improving or declining performance in other players. This being so, my question is, can board games be utilized as a qualitative measurement of cognitive decline? Also, might increasing game playing capacity indicate that an entirely different area of the mind is being engaged? An area which does not relate to short term recollections, but long term muscle/mind memory/reflex.
