I'm not sure i totally understand your question. But What is the "unit" of your optical density ?  Are you talking of grey level, g/cm3  ?

If I understand the question: If you are using CT you are probably assessing CT-densities. CT densiteis of cortical bone varies substantially, but are usually > 1000 CT-units, Densitiy of cancellous bone is in the order of 50 to 300 CT-units. Often we see a fairly sharp (steep rise in CT-densities) on the border between cancellous adn cortical bone.

I am wanting to use greyscale measures of optical density in order to 'quantitate' changes in defect healing with formation of new bone.
